‘Get educated and make your own choices’
Yesterday I had the pleasure of talking to a really genuine and down to earth man who has a very inspirational story and a clear message for men. His cancer journey not only pushed him into taking responsibility for his own health and treatment plan, but it also propelled him into a new healthy lifestyle business venture, which led the production of an Irish made top end masticating juicer at an affordable price. Go John! And did I mention that he is father to Sean and Conor Price – the incredible Irish duo currently (and still) on the X Factor – who drink their green juice every day even in the X Factor house. Read on….
On the 9th November, 2011, John, 45 (at the time) was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Over a 3 month interval his PSA levels doubled and although his GP was not concerned, John decided to do take his health into his own hands. He contacted Today FM’s Tony Fenton who had spoken very openly about his prostate cancer. ‘Tony was extremely helpful’ said John who decided to visit a consultant, who did a biopsy 10 days later and within a week the results confirmed that John had cancer on both sides of the prostate. Prostate cancer is not as common and the prognosis is not as good in a man of his age. The treatment plan suggested involved surgery, radiotherapy and bracytherapy with some nasty side effects. “Men get embarrassed, talking about the possibility of erectile dysfunction, colon dysfunction and other side effects that follow this course of treatment’ asserted John who talks to many men and women struggling with health issues or who simply want to optimise their health.
He went on to have Robotic DaVinci surgery in Germany on January 4th 2012 which was covered by the VHi and is now available in Ireland. This state of the art surgery has left John with not one single side effect and he is very happy he made the decision to have the surgery. His take home message is that knowledge is power. ‘Cancer is a big word. Find out what type of cancer you have, what stage of cancer you have, and what your treatment options are before making a decision.’ John opted for surgery along with a plant based nutrient dense diet to boost his own immune system and move his body to it’s natural state of health. As he says himself, ‘I knew nothing about raw food or vegetarianism or cancer for that matter’. He cobbled together information which led him to workshops and meeting people along the way who helped him. He pays special , tribute to Veronica – amazing Raw Food Chef from Healthy Habits Cafe in Wicklow. ‘I couldn’t have done it without her’.. ‘it was hard to get my family to embrace it at first’. He went on a totally raw plant based diet for 12 months and juiced wheatgrass and green juice daily.
Nowadays, while he still juices daily, and currently even in the X Factor house, his diet is plant strong, unprocessed, sugar free and about 70% raw and 30% cooked. He has his CPD oil and his probiotics with him in London. John has a strong yet infinitely balanced and practical approach to health and nutrition. He does not charge for advice as he is ‘not qualified’ although I consider the research put in to help himself to recover from cancer puts him in the ‘qualified’ bracket in my book. His PSA levels are now checked annually and come back at 0 every year and his ‘own health file ‘ records the results of his annual bloods which he requests himself from his GP. If he sees anything amiss, he adjusts his diet.
This man certainly breaks the mould when it comes to taking responsibility for your health and has simplified and debunked healthy eating. It costs €30 for the blood test each year. He had to learn as he was going and though an electronic engineer in his previous life, his search to find solutions for his own health dilemma led him to create his own business where he can help others. His Irish made cold press masticating juicer trades at 1/3 of the price of other popular masticating juicers.
John had to cut our call to head off to the studio to support the boys for this weekends show which is George Michael weekend – not the best for a 15 and 18 year old! They were busking to drum up some UK support but really need Irish votes (they have since got through for another week), so please vote for them this Saturday night.
His final message to men in particular this November was – ‘I’m not going to say the cliches like get yourself checked, because when I was diagnosed, even though my friends were surprised, none of them went for a check up. Men are like that. So, I would say, know your body and if you notice something unusual or a change, get it checked, act fast, take responsibility, get knowledge and explore all avenues before making a decision. Take responsibility in conjunction with medical treatment.’
