“I’m a mother of six fabulous children, aged from 17-32, and all of whom still live in Ireland which is great. In 2005 I got a letter from BreastCheck inviting me for a check-up. I was 52 at the time. After my appointment, I received a letter from them asking me to come back but not to worry as it doesn’t mean anything is wrong. I went back alone as, like most people I thought ‘I don’t get these things!’. I had another exam and was asked to go back the following week and this time, to bring a partner or friend with me. I knew then I was in trouble. However BreastCheck were excellent and I put myself in their capable hands.
I had my mastectomy on August 12th 2005 followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I have just got the all-clear for another year so I am delighted.
I’ve had wonderful support all along from my husband Dennis, my family and also breast cancer support groups. One of the reasons I got involved with breast cancer groups is that service has been very bad with regard to getting prosthetics and bras. The first time is usually fine as nurses do the first fitting. For the second fitting, people usually go online, or go somewhere where they are told what you need.
“A well-fitting prosthesis and bra work wonders for your self-confidence”
Domenica Doyle, Breast Care Centre Manager, Roches
Anne Roche thought I would be very suitable to run the Roches Breast Care Centre due to my personal experience. I know exactly what our clients are going through as I have been through the same thing myself. Since I joined Roches, I have been trained on the theory of breast care forms and also on the practical side of taking measurements.
In Roches Breast Care Centre, people can take as long as they need, and can try on as many different breastforms, bras and swimwear as they like. That’s something I feel very strongly about. We do not operate a conveyor belt in here. It’s all about choice. People have to try things on, feel and touch them. Weight is also a factor when trying on prosthesis. In the five years since I’ve had my mastectomy, its amazing how many new and improved products are available. That’s where we are different – lots of choice in a relaxed environment, for as long as it takes to choose what you like.
